One of the main reasons I find working at DLA Piper so fantastic is the firm's organization. Departments are clearly demarcated and easily accessible. The main tasks within each position are properly outlined as well as adhered to, thankfully not stiflingly so. The programs I typically use are technologically satisfactory to properly complete one's duties. I truly feel that anything I need to do my work is available to me. And of course, the people are wonderful!"

I love the firm's commitment to pro bono projects. So many people and community organizations need legal services. DLA Piper has been a leader in the community - helping veterans apply for special compensation, assisting applicants seeking asylum, preparing clemency petitions for non-violent inmates, and holding weekly reading programs for 4th to 7th grade students. This is a small fraction of the great work that the firm does daily!"

What do you like about working at DLA Piper?

One of the best aspects is the clout behind the name. I have had countless conversations with vendors who want our input on how to improve their products. The sense has always been that if they can get it right for DLA Piper, then it will be the best possible product. I enjoy working at a firm that is recognized as the gold standard.

What do you enjoy most about working with your team?

I like being surrounded by smart people. That starts with our director, who always seems to be two steps ahead of her peers at other firms. It then extends through everyone on the team who can be counted on to come with questions from every conceivable angle, push themselves to find the best solutions, and search for ways to improve processes and enhance efficiency.

What has been your greatest achievement in the past couple of years?

I have had a hand in hiring some exceptional team members who have contributed to the success of the firm.

What do you like about working at DLA Piper?

There are many great aspects to working at DLA Piper. I have been very lucky to be here for 12 years, first in the New York office and now in Tampa as part of the Business Operation Services team. DLA Piper made that big office transfer and life change smooth and comfortable for me. There is a good office culture and great sense of collaboration throughout the firm. Even though it is such a large organization, we all feel like we are working together. Also, I greatly appreciate the good work-life balance afforded by the great benefits and a schedule that works for me and my family.

What do you enjoy most about working with your team?

Since DLA Piper is a truly global firm with so many practices and services, I think one of the best aspects about working on my team is the daily interaction with such a diverse group of people from so many backgrounds. Because our department comes into contact with so many practice groups and departments, I am constantly meeting new people and getting involved in new projects. Every day is unexpected because I can dive into new assignments all the time. It helps that I love learning new things and helping other people, so that makes my job enjoyable.

What has been your greatest achievement in the past couple of years?

My greatest achievement in the last couple of years is my professional development. I am constantly striving to learn more, and my department provides many opportunities to learn about new research services and techniques. It also helps that, because we are working as such a close team, we are able to share our knowledge with each other. I like to share anything new that I learn with my colleagues, and I am always learning from them too.

What do you feel are the best aspects about working for DLA Piper?

I value DLA Piper as a professional organization with a personal touch. Communication is key to the success of my team, and management always strives to facilitate cooperation, efficiently and effectively. Human Resources also does excellent work ensuring that staff is supported holistically. Another notable feature of DLA Piper is the commitment to staff training. Our IT instructors do an excellent job of teaching classes and making educational materials available so we have the tools to work efficiently and effectively.

What do you feel are the best aspects about working on your team?

Innovation is the first word that comes to mind when I think of my team. Due to the impact of technology in our field, we have transitioned from being what most think of as a traditional library to a national Research and Knowledge Services department, with re-designed workflows, extensive electronic resources and new methods of serving the firm. This innovation has taken a great deal of time and effort, and I am proud to be part of the team that has brought something dynamic and significant to the table.

What has been your greatest achievement in the last couple of years?

I am proud of my department's work in transitioning from print to digital resources. We have worked to secure a seven-figure reduction in print costs while expanding our collection of electronic resources that offer the attorneys powerful new tools. This process has involved extensive planning, training and effort. In the end, we have built something newer, more efficient and cost-effective.

What do you like about working at DLA Piper?

I have worked for DLA Piper for over 20 years and participated in the mergers that created DLA Piper, one of the largest law firms in the world. One of the best aspects about working for DLA Piper is the challenges. Over the last 20 years, my responsibilities have changed every couple of years, and there is always opportunity for new experiences. Another aspect is the people. Through the years, I have been in contact with a spectrum of people − partners, associates, administrative assistants − and have enjoyed working with them all. Even though we have grown into one of the largest law firms in the world, my department and other co-workers still feel like family.

What do you enjoy most about working with your team?

I have had the opportunity to learn from the best. One of the best aspects of being on the accounting team is the overall learning experience we get by taking on new challenges. I also feel the department works well together in order to succeed and promote itself within the firm.

What has been your greatest achievement in the past couple of years?

One of my greatest achievements over the past couple of years is the preparation of the January Partner distribution, the largest transaction of the year. I have complete ownership of this project and feel it is a huge accomplishment.

What do you like about working at DLA Piper?

Working for a large global law firm has been amazing and challenging. We help cutting-edge companies across geographies accomplish their growth goals and our work has a direct impact on their success. It is fulfilling being part of a team that provides value and makes a difference as companies scale. As an individual within the firm, I frequently see how the firm recognizes and rewards hard work.

What do you enjoy most about working with your team?

The client development team is highly collaborative. Different team members contribute different perspectives, and the synergy between team members can produce creative and exciting results. Being able to work across geographies and practice groups to drive revenue for the firm is both challenging and rewarding. I am also given a lot of autonomy to create new initiatives for business development.

What has been your greatest achievement in the past couple of years?

I am directly accountable to the Tax practice group leaders and responsible for helping to implement the business development and client acquisition aspects of their plan. DLA Piper has given me the opportunity to be an integral part of this process. I work to raise the profile of tax services as a business solution. I have enjoyed the challenges of growing our client base, by managing and by originating opportunities. In addition, I am given ample scope to develop professionally, by mentoring others on our team and working directly with strategic clients.

What do you like about working at DLA Piper?

I have worked at four different law firms in NYC. Without a doubt, DLA Piper has been the most welcoming and gratifying place to work that I have experienced. DLA Piper is a firm where hard work is appreciated, recognized and rewarded. Not only do supervisors and managers regularly acknowledge employees who have demonstrated exceptional effort, they also express their gratitude for consistent high-quality work. DLA Piper even provides managers with a way to nominate employees for monetary spot awards to affirm their appreciation. DLA Piper's generous contributions to our retirement plans show that it is a firm that cares about the future of its employees.

What do you enjoy most about working with your team?

The Litigation Support department is a diverse team of skilled individuals with a variety of backgrounds and decades of experience in e-discovery technology and workflows. We work together to provide accurate and timely assistance to the case teams. I am proud to be a member of this team. The leadership of this department encourages personal and professional growth by providing access to training/certification programs and working with each member of the team to make sure he/she has the necessary resources to succeed.

What has been your greatest achievement in the past couple of years?

My supervisor and manager supported my goal to become an expert in Litigation Support's most essential application, Relativity. In order to be officially recognized as an expert by kCura, the developer of Relativity, I needed to pass three different certification exams. I accomplished this goal. With the knowledge I obtained while preparing for the exams, I am better prepared to assist my teammates and case teams.

What do you like about working at DLA Piper?

As a DLA Piper employee, I have had abundant access to resources, experience and talent which has never been limited to my own office. A single case team can consist of team members located all over the country and in some cases all over the world. The distance does not stop us: every team member plays a unique and important role. I take great pride in the collaboration and unity found among my various case teams.

What do you enjoy most about working with your team?

The Litigation Support department at DLA Piper consists of project managers and analysts from a variety of backgrounds and diverse experiences. We encounter challenging projects and technical issues, and in those times, it is great to be part of a team with so much knowledge and experience.

What has been your greatest achievement in the past couple of years?

Through consistency, training, collaboration and much brainstorming, I have fostered good eDiscovery habits in the many offices I support. I have also established a consistent workflow in regard to data collection, culling, review, production and documentation. While no two cases are the same, this relatively consistent eDiscovery framework has provided a sense of control, transparency and continuity for many of my teams and our clients.

What do you like about working at DLA Piper?

DLA Piper is a fantastic law firm to work for. The firm is always finding new and better benefits to help employees, from great medical and dental coverage options to retirement savings plans and even assistance in refinancing student loans. The firm also puts a strong emphasis on education – you can learn about new technology and software through webinars and e-learning programs designed to be taken at your pace and in a way that fits your schedule. The case teams and individuals I work with are fantastic. It is always a real pleasure to come to work.

What do you enjoy most about working with your team?

The Litigation Support department assists with the management and review of electronic documents for case teams. We also provide assistance for case teams in preparing for and during trial. One of the best parts of working in this department is the continual learning. As technology continues to progress, our department needs to be ready to advise the lawyers on the best and most defensible methods for handling electronic documents in a way that does not affect the integrity of the files and that ensures the files are not altered in anyway. Our work is fast paced, but we communicate with each other all the time, and we are always open to sharing new ideas and approaches.

What has been your greatest achievement in the past couple of years?

DLA Piper is very interested in promoting growth, achievement and success. Recently I was able to take my Relativity Certified User certification exam. My managers worked with me to ensure I had ample time to study and prepare for the exam and even covered the examination fee. I feel this was a very strong example of the direct investment and interest that DLA Piper has in promoting its staff.

My team and co-workers are among the best in the industry! I love the forward thinking and ability to come up with creative solutions to challenging issues.

What has been your greatest achievement in the past couple of years?

My greatest achievement has been the way that my career has evolved over the years. Last year, I was asked to present to a peer group to share my tips and tricks on how we manage our data. Another accomplishment I am proud of is that we switched mailing platforms while live mailings/events were happening. The transition to the new system was seamless, and I am proud of the work we did to make that happen.

I feel that the pride the firm takes in its client relationships, the commitment to producing quality results, how the firm treats attorneys and staff equally, and the family environment that the firm fosters are the best aspects of working at DLA Piper. DLA Piper promotes collegiality, allowing the sum of our work to be much greater than the parts. The firm works tirelessly to empower staff to maximize our strengths, thus bringing out the best in each team member while still fostering our individuality.

What do you enjoy most about working with your team?

The Information Technology team at DLA Piper is very much a family, and I am fortunate to work with a tremendously kind and generous group of people every day. While we all have busy schedules, the staff in this group does not hesitate to jump in and help when needed. From top leadership to interns, this talented team cannot be matched at any other organization.

What has been your greatest achievement in the past couple of years?

I began my career at DLA Piper in January 2016 and am amazed at the meaningful relationships I have developed in such a short amount of time. These relationships have allowed for a greater dialogue between the users of technology and those who provide technology at the firm. Because of this, my team has enacted several key initiatives to further innovation within the firm and has worked with our attorneys and clients on how to apply technology directly in the practice of law.

What do you like about working at DLA Piper?

The best part about working for DLA Piper is getting to be a part of a large, outstanding firm. People often say you get lost in a big firm - that a large firm is just a "name." To say this of DLA Piper is to say you don't know DLA Piper at all! You are a part of a larger culture and an asset to a growing name, having the opportunity to contribute to just that. The more you do, the more involved you make yourself, and the more fulfilling it is. I am humbled to be part of that. As legal professionals, we are all competitive, but life here is more than that. It is also about progress, growth and collaboration.

What do you enjoy most about working with your team?

I work for the IP Trademark and Copyright group. It is a blessing to be led by respected partners who go to great lengths to make our group inclusive and diverse, utilizing people and what they bring. I love being led by partners who share the same vision of people as me, who care deeply for things that matter and who make sure that caring extends within the work place and beyond. Everyone in the group works exceptionally hard and we sharpen one another. The professional value I have gained by being a part of this group cannot be more highly valued. I am lucky!

What has been your greatest achievement in the past couple of years?

When you can pair your personal abilities with your professional abilities, you learn to become invaluable to a group and a team. It took me some time to let some of my abilities show, but as soon I learned to balance the two, I realized how much opportunity I had – the opportunity to grow, to take charge and to lead in a way that I didn't think was possible before. I am not just here for my group, I am here for the whole experience and to be a part of DLA Piper wherever and however I can. There is no timetable, and that is a great feeling. I am not only at my best, but that is being redefined and sharpened every day.

What do you like about working at DLA Piper?

The chance to work for other offices – nationally and internationally. To cross borders like this broadens your knowledge in your practice field. I enjoy being asked to take on different projects for various offices. And I value the life-work balance – flexibility is required to work full-time while being an involved parent. I was a single mom for years and having flexibility with my schedule allowed me the opportunity to be there for my son. There was also flexibility when I needed it to support my younger sister in her fight for her life with brain cancer. I will always be grateful for the support and understanding. Unfortunately she lost her battle, but I never felt punished for taking time off − DLA Piper never wavered in supporting me as I tried to balance everything. We all have loved ones who at some point need us, and it is nice to work for an employer who understands the personal needs in life also! l will always be grateful to my team and the firm for supporting me during that time.

What do you enjoy most about working with your team?

I have worked for my Raleigh office team for many years and have been blessed with a wonderful group – from support staff to Managing Partner. They are the nicest people! I have also worked with a number of highly skilled paralegals in this firm who impress me every day with their knowledge and experience level.

What has been your greatest achievement in the past couple of years?

There have been a few! I have been able to expand my skills and cross over into other practice areas. I have taken on a group in our Chicago office for whom I handle securities filings, and it has definitely forced me to think outside the box and expand my knowledge base. I think my greatest achievement is being respected by the attorneys and requested to assist (even when I am not able to do so), because this conveys their respect and value for my experience and knowledge. I have also enjoyed training other paralegals in the firm – I have enjoyed sharing my experiences with them as they grow their careers. I also worked closely with administration, accounting and paralegal admin to implement an electronic filing system that was an option for a majority of the states for blue sky filings via NASAA. It made sense that we should file electronically because it was much more cost effective for our clients and for the firm.

Operations

The Operations department is a service-oriented team that aims to ensure attorneys and other departments have the physical resources to meet our client's expectations.

Operations team members have frequent daily interaction with lawyers, professional staff, vendors and clients. Since all DLA Piper employees rely on them for all their support needs, our team members are well rounded and have a diverse skill set.

What do you like about working at DLA Piper?

One of the best aspects about working at the firm is the encouragement that I have received from management and leadership. It can be a rare occurrence in today's society to engage with those who really do care about you and want to see you succeed. I have been blessed to work with some really great people. I enjoy interacting with others and getting to know them and I believe that this fosters a spirit of willingness to go the extra mile to meet the needs of others. The catering staff and I work in tandem to accomplish this goal.

What has been your greatest achievement in the past couple of years?

The transition into Hospitality Services was a huge achievement and one that I was grateful to see come to fruition. I take pride in working with the firm's internal and external clients on event planning and conference service, and our teamwork has been a blessing. It is rewarding to see an event run smoothly and to know that both the hosting attorneys and their clients are pleased. This is a responsibility that I do not take lightly.

I like the fact that I work for one of the largest global business law firms in the world. My role at DLA Piper is Operations Manager. I manage three offices: Austin, Atlanta and Mexico City. I have been with DLA Piper for almost 20 years. Because of the firm's willingness to promote from within, I have been able to experience multiple disciplines in the financial arena – billing, collections, financial statement preparation, budgeting and profitability, to name a few. I've been here a long time, but my job still feels fresh and exciting.

What do you like about working at DLA Piper?

I believe that the people at DLA Piper are some of the best people I have had the pleasure of working with. The professionalism and intellect across the Boston office, from attorneys to staff, far exceeds that of other large firms where I have worked. Even with the evolving changes in technology and its impact over the past 15-20 years in the legal field, this office has managed to maintain some of the key facets, from a people perspective, that are necessary to have a successful firm and practice.

What do you enjoy most about working with your team?

I believe it is the character of the people on my team that helps me to perform my job at a high level.

What has been your greatest achievement in the past couple of years?

Interview tips

  • Do your research

Interviewers will be impressed when you show that you have taken the time to learn about the firm, the interviewer and the job responsibilities.

When you have your in-person interview, learn as much as you can about the office through your own observation and by asking questions of the people you come into contact with.

Review common interview questions and practice your responses. Keep responses concise and specific.

  • Dress to impress

Recent trends show that standard dress attire is business casual. For an interview, you want to dress to impress. Overdressing will never work against you. It will also help you feel more confident.

  • Arrive early and be prepared

Always be early to an interview. However, do not arrive too early; 10-15 minutes before your scheduled interview time is appropriate. Leave enough time to park the car, commute, have a train delay, check in with building security in metropolitan locations, change shoes and deal with unplanned bumps. Arriving early will also give you the opportunity to relax and observe.

Have copies of your resume, work samples, and a pen and pad to take notes, and turn off your cell phone.

  • Prepare and practice your sales pitch

First impressions count, so be prepared and make a strong first impression.

Your knowledge, skills and experience are what got you the interview. Review the job requirements. Prepare to tie the story of your knowledge, skills, experience, professional accomplishments and the impact you have made to the requirements noted in the job advertisement.

  • Ask relevant questions

This will let interviewers know that you are interested and curious about them and the firm. It will also help you gather information about the firm. If you need clarification, do not hesitate to ask the interviewer follow up questions.  Feel free to take notes during your interview. It shows that you are engaged and listening.

  • Follow up

After the interview, take the time to send personal emails to each interviewer. It is a good practice to ask the interviewers for business cards so you have their name, title and contact information.
